Story line: The Pittsburgh Penguins have never lost to the New York Rangers in a playoff series. They are 4-0 with series wins in 1989, 1992, 1996 and 2008. Pittsburgh is 16-4 in playoff games against New York.
Goaltenders: Penguins' Marc-Andre Fleury (4-2, 2.81, .908) vs. Rangers' Henrik Lundqvist (4-3, 2.11, .919). This series could be decided by the play of these two men. Lundqvist has been the sharper of the two.
Focal point: Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby, clearly the NHL's best player this season, didn't have a goal in the first round. Fans in Pittsburgh have considerable angst about whether he is playing through an injury.
Season series: Both teams won one game in regulation and one in a shootout. New York outscored Pittsburgh 14-13. They have not met since Feb. 7.
What the Penguins want to do: 1. Play a full 60-minute game. They need to duplicate the effort they had in Game 5 against Columbus, or the first two periods of Game 6. They were sloppy in the first round and sloppy won't get this team very far in these playoffs; 2. Get a sustained, full series effort from Evgeni Malkin. Penguins need Malkin to be the confident player he was in Game 6. The Penguins won't beat New York without Crosby and Malkin making some noise. 3. Tighten down the screws defensively. They are the better offensive team, and all they have to do to win this series is to play consistently well defensively.
